This day in 1861 Texas seceded from the Union. The secession convention had met on January 28, 1861, and on February 1, members voted 166 to 8 to secede. They drafted and signed the Ordinance of Secession.
The secession of the Southern states and the institution of the Confederate States of America was a revolution against Northern tyranny and theft by an unequal tax burden, among other serious intrusions. The revolution may have been forced into remission by a despoiling, defiling, murderous army that did not discriminate between soldiers, elderly, women, or children, white or black, but it did not put down their dream, or their spirit. The same spirit that stirred our revolution against a tyrannical British rule.
God bless Texas and the South. May there always be an irate, tireless minority who refuses to bow to tyranny and accept the loss of their sovereignty and the freedom to live as they choose.
